Fancy Blue
Should I add another Cory Catfish to my Freshwater Aquarium to keep my other one company?
My new 30 gallon tank has recently cycled and is going strong with a Black Molly, Lemon Tetra, Powder Blue Gourami, Fancy Blue Guppy and single Albino Cory Catfish.
I think I’d like to add another Cory Catfish later if that would work in the tank and if the two would get along. PLUS, would it make a difference if the additional Cory was something other than an Albino? Thanks in advance for the advice.
This is a great question…it is always a good idea to consider the needs of your fish. For a 30 gallon tank, considering you have adequate filtration and are punctual with water changes and gravel vacuuming, you should be able to safely “house” 30 “inches” of full grown fish… Since Corys (one of my favorite species) are a shoaling species (schooling at the bottom of their habitat) they are much happier and more content with at least 3 of their own kind, preferably more. if you have 1 albino, then you could get a couple or so albinos to go with it…uneven numbers tend to work better. My personal favorite is the little “Corydoras Panda” and you can have more than 1 species in your tank…they somehow know their own species and tend to hang out together…Corys are fairly easy to persuade to spawn…there are a lot of articles on the net about this and you may enjoy reading about it and trying your hand at raising a clutch or two. Good luck and enjoy your new and fascinating hobby!! (Don’t expect your corys to eat algae growing in your tank exclusively… supplementing nightly with sinking algae wafers can mean the difference in thriving and starving. (…and they won’t eat fish poop) I’ll shut up now.
